A thousand-mile expedition through Eastern Canadian outports and remote towns led Michael Cloud Duguay to seven aging organs whose voices resonate throughout Kingdom Come, Kingdom Go.
In 2022 as COVID restrictions were starting to ease, the Ontario musician Michael Cloud Duguay, his collaborator, Jake Nichol, and two others took to the road with a solar-powered recording studio and a singular mission: to capture and harness the sounds of aging pipe organs in churches in Newfoundland. During two years of planning, they’d reached out to parishioners at the churches in advance, and across the following weeks, the quartet captured the sound of Duguay’s organ explorations and experiments, as well as field recordings in and around the sacred spaces. Duguay is releasing the work built from that adventure, called Kingdom Come, Kingdom Go, on July 10.
A breathtaking musical document, the album finds beauty in the imperfections of aging instruments. Bellows growl from deep within the organ’s ornate casework. Atonal utterances arrive warped by time, weather and neglect. Wind chests wheeze beneath decades of accumulated dust, while menacing moans rise heavenward through a few carefully chosen stops.
