A UK Balearic house legend and LA's premier dream dub ensemble walk into a bar…
Ok, seriously though, Puli, the trio comprising Phil Cho (of SY3, Third Place and hundreds of heroic DJ sets across the Southland), John Jones (AV Moves, Geo Rip, JJ+JS) and Damon Palermo (Magic Touch, Mi Ami, legend) have not put a foot wrong. They introduced themselves with a heavy leftfield dub 45 for Australian imprint Constant Delay before dropping an album, Swirling, that felt like dipping into calm waters at the end of summer. This crew stumbles onto oddball groove after groove, and on and on.
Apiento, well-known for recent downtempo classics like "The Things We Do For Love", his essential Test Pressing site, morning takeovers at Love International and plenty more besides, recently visited Puli HQ in Chinatown LA—the results are stellar and unexpected. "Zero Buzz" is a wonky and addictive 80 BPM groove, while "Encino" utilizes Jones's well-known guitar skills, a mix of Robin Guthrie shimmer and leftfield dub house. Meanwhile, "To Live and Cry in L.A." reimagines Krautronic landmarks like Double Fantasy's "Universal Ave." for the endless LA summer, with Palermo dropping some insouciant freestyles. Cho, quickly proving himself as a bassist of the highest order, effortlessly kicks in the low-end groove where needed while Apiento daubs modular synth throughout; he's heard beatific pads and acid squiggles beam into plenty of pink sunrises and seems thrilled to chaperone the proceedings.
Jones brought these wooly jams to their final form. Alex Talan mixed them. It's another brilliant release from Cinnamon Disc following Crespi Drum Syndicate's immediately sold-out Colada Talk. Dub, downtempo, idiosyncratic house, spaced-out cosmic synth… it's all here. Ease yourself and glide.
